With the release of Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S24 series, the company just announced to offer the same level of updates that Google recently set with the Pixel 8 series.

Last year, Google promised seven years of Android updates for their flagship Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. That means the Pixel 8 series users will continue to receive updates until 2030. This set a new precedent for long-term support in the Android world.

Now, Samsung is saying that they will match Google’s commitment to updates with the S24 series. Users who choose to purchase the S24 series phone will get seven years of Android security updates and seven years of OS updates as well.

This is a major announcement from Samsung as they have never done that before. In the past, Samsung only offered four major OS updates and five years of security updates. This shift in the policy is in line with the company’s commitments to sustainability. E-waste is a challenge and issue for us and Samsung is trying to do its part in it.

It will mean that users who purchase S24 series devices will receive major Android updates till 2031 or Android 20. It is possible that the devices continue to receive security updates and critical patches beyond the cutoff date. The device will receive the OS updates as long as the latest version can function on the hardware.

This change is only applicable to the S24 series devices, the previous flagship from Samsung will still receive four years of OS updates and five years of security updates.

Users can buy Samsung Galaxy S24 series devices from the Samsung website, offline stores, and e-commerce portals.
