| Updated on March 21, 2024

One of the most annoying things for ebike lovers must be theft, right? Have your ebikes ever been stolen? A few months ago, I dropped my ebike outside a convenience store and when I came out, it was just gone. That was really desperate.

And unfortunately, there is not any way to prevent ebike thefts completely as those most thieves can even be crazier. However, there are still some ways you can take to make it difficult for those thieves to steal your precious ebikes.

4 Tips to Prevent Ebike thefts

Pay for Insurance

Pay Insurance

To be exact, being covered by ebike insurance can not prevent ebike thefts, but if your ebikes are stolen, unfortunately, you can get premiums to buy yourself a brand-new ebike. From my perspective, that sounds not bad.

Use GPS Tracker

As the technology is getting more and more advanced, GPS trackers are improving. Basically, they are made and designed to be small in case they are noticed. You can attach a GPS tracker to your ebike and connect your smartphone with it so that you are able to know the location of your ebike wherever you are.

As for the price, some GPS trackers can be affordable while others will cost you a lot. Before jumping to a GPS tracker, you may need to consider your needs or requirements.

Use Ebike Locks

Obviously, the first step to prevent your ebikes from being stolen has a firm and helpful lock. There are a variety of locks for sale, like regular U locks and foldable chain locks or cable locks.

U locks are taken as the most regular and secure ones because they are made of solid materials. However, it is also known to most of you that U locks could be heavier than any other locks and they can’t bend or flex, which is quite limiting.

As compared to U locks, cable locks are more flexible. However, before trying to buy a cable lock, one thing to be considered is that don’t try to buy thin cable locks for their lightweight as they will be easily cut by those thieves with only a pair of pliers.

Folding locks are becoming more and more popular, especially for those who prefer to commute by electric bikes. They are usually flexible and light, allowing you to lock your ebikes in most circumstances. For example, Magicycle’s foldable chain lock is made of 26 alloy structural steel links, which are sturdy and durable, and of course anti-breaking and anti-cutting. If a thief is trying to cut it off, I am sure it will be way more difficult. Also, we call it a “hamburger lock” because once it is folded up, the size is small and it just looks like a hamburger. Use Your Lock in a Correct Way

After having a suitable lock, you should know how to lock your ebikes appropriately. If not, even the sturdiest locks will be useless. Basically, your locks should pass through the frame and both the front and rear wheel. And also, if you are in an area where there are many bike thieves, try to prepare a second lock.

Moreover, select an object with which your ebikes can be locked, such as a rock or a tree. In this way, it is almost impossible for any thief to steal your ebikes.

Select a Right Spot

To be honest, if the spot where you lock your ebikes is safe enough, then you don’t need to worry too much. Wherever you are trying to park your ebikes, make sure there are surveillance cameras around you. If you are somewhere with which you are not familiar, ask the local people, especially those who are cycling as well because they may be thinking about the same thing as you do.

How to Handle Ebike Theft

Ebike Theft

First thing first, if your electric bikes for adults are stolen, try to contact the local police and tell them as much necessary information as you can. If you are lucky enough to remember the serial number of the frame, which can prove that the ebike belongs to you, don’t hesitate to tell the police.

Second, if your ebike is covered by insurance, contact the insurance company to file an insurance claim, but how? The first step is to call 911 if necessary and tell them all the details. The second step is to document key information, including name, address, phone number, etc. Afterinig gathering all the information needed, you can just file your insurance claim. Nowadays, many insurance companies have their own official apps for you to do that. Of course, you can just reach the company, it is up to you.

Third, make use of the internet by uploading the images or details of your ebikes on as many social media as you can, especially those that are well-known to the whole globe, like Twitter or Facebook. If the thief is trying to sell your ebike by chance, it is possible that some guys may find it and tell you what is happening.

Alright, that is all about handling issues of ebike thefts. Even though your ebikes are covered by insurance, I believe most of you don’t want to waste that time filing a claim. An ebike could be affordable, but that does not necessarily mean that the price is low. I hope you can take good care of your electric bikes and this article can be helpful.
