There is a piece of strong news that Honor has declared a massive commitment of around $10 billion in investments into artificial intelligence over the next five years. Along with it, they announced a reinforced partnership with Google as part of the goal of the Chinese smartphone maker to make a more visible footprint in international markets.
It was disclosed at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2025 in Barcelona that this investment plan aims to bring Honor as more than a smartphone manufacturer into a complete “AI device ecosystem company,” according to it.
Locking horns as a challenger in the smartphone space, Honor split from Huawei in 2020 after the U.S. imposed sanctions on the technology giant. Ever since the company has been trying to extend its reach beyond China and into the premium market dominated by Apple and Samsung.
Even though Honor has been making strides with the introduction of innovative products such as foldable smartphones, its share of the global market remains minimal. According to IDC, its alone-slice market stood at 2.3% in 2024, up from just 1.7% the previous year.
A spokesperson from Honor told CNBC that this fund will go toward making artificial intelligence part of the hardware and next generations of AI agents, the so-called supercharged virtual assistants.
Funding for a platform for a wide range of AI devices will also be incorporated into the allocation. The representative of Honor mentioned, “This is not limited to our own devices, but also AI devices from different partners, so the different kinds of AI devices can talk to each other, and consumers can have more choices and seamless experience.”
Also, a small part of the investment will be set aside for the welcome and preparation of the coming age of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
