How Tech Can Make Travel Planning Easier

| Updated on February 14, 2024

Planning a vacation or work trip is much easier currently than it was two decades ago. This is mostly because of technological improvements like the internet, GPS, and smartphones. You can do most prep work for your next trip from your mobile phone. Some apps will even import information such as dates, events, and reservation confirmations directly to your calendar, so you do not have to worry about writing anything down or leaving necessary paperwork at home.

Online Bookings, Apps, and Memberships

Booking your vacation can be as easy as searching the internet for how to plan a cruise, road trip, or flight and then choosing between results for informational blogs on travel booking sites. You can even bookmark your favorite sites, download the app or create a membership account to check back each time you need to travel or to keep an eye on sales and deals for your desired destinations. Travel apps will usually feature tools to help you make reservations, check-in or out of rooms, and even find restaurants nearby. You can sometimes earn or use travel points through these memberships and receive notifications of events or deals which might help you plan a future vacation. Once you have booked your travel plans, overnight accommodations, or even fun activities, you can send receipts to your email, import information to your calendar and planning apps, or even share the dates with family or friends.

Packing and Itineraries

Not only can you quickly book your vacation plans with your mobile device, but you can also create or import packing lists and itineraries with many of the same apps. Advice and travel blogs will often feature sample packing lists or even resources to help you know what to pack for specific destinations or types of accommodations. Technology can even help you save room in your luggage without forgetting essential items. For instance, your phone or tablet can work as a reading library, an in-flight movie, and a music player. So you don’t need to see how many books, and DVDs can fit in your luggage. You will not even need to pack paper copies of your itinerary and can instantly share updates with everyone in your group when things change.

Maps and Directions

There were no GPS, or directions apps before the internet, so you would have to buy maps for each location you wanted to travel to and carry it with you. This meant having a good navigator in the passenger seat or frequently stopping to find the correct map and to hope for accurate and plentiful road signs for road trips. These days, you can get a map for going anywhere, all you need is a signal. You can also get step-by-step directions with estimated arrival times, traffic updates, and alternative routes of travel. You can also send pins for where you are to family and friends at home so they can see your progress and share that information with emergency personnel if something happens.

Disruptions and Alternatives

No matter the planning and thought you have put into your next trip, some stuff can still go wrong. The weather can delay flights and disrupt outdoor activities. The museum or amusement park you want to visit may be overcrowded. With your mobile device, you can find information on travel delays, alternative activities at the last minute, and even find restaurants or convenience stores that deliver food or other items to your room. You can also find local doctors and emergency rooms if you are injured or ill.

As technology has advanced over the last couple of decades, the prep work for vacation or work travel has become steadily easier. These days you can book everything from a cruise package to a walking tour from your mobile device, have accurate directions without packing paper maps, and keep track of everyone in your group, even when plans change.

Find the best restaurants and activities

With apps like Zomato, Yelp, and TripAdvisor, it is easier to find great restaurants in the local area. It will literally take a few minutes, to find the best places to eat in New Orleans or the best ice cream shops in California. You’d also be able to see photos, customer reviews, and the kind of food they serve.

For events and activities, apps such as Like A Local and Eventbrite are extremely helpful.
