X May Remove Account Blocking Options in the App

| Updated on September 27, 2024

It has been reported that X has been considering removing the account-blocking option in the app.

X has been talking about this for over a year. They are now looking to remove the block button from several places. An app researcher by the name of Nima Owji shared this through his X profile. Check out the tweet by him.

According to Nima, the social media giant is removing the block option from the posts. However, there will still be a block option on the profile. So, from now on, users will have to go to the profile to block someone.

Even if you’ve blocked an account, you will still be able to see their public posts.

This means that if you don’t want someone to see your posts, they share them privately or to your followers only. Posts that are shared with followers only would keep them hidden.

X is saying that blocking someone or not, they can still see your public posts through a different account or via an incognito browser. So, it does not make any sense to keep using the blocking option.

However, there will be one benefit of blocking someone. They won’t be able to automatically see your updates in their feed, which can be pretty valuable for many users.

Social media is a giant rabbit hole that can hook you up for hours. This also led to abuse and harassment. This option would be a great deterrent to harassment or abuse. Yes, they will be able to see your public updates but those updates won’t be readily available to those users.

Even Elon Musk believes that blocking is a negative element to a social media app. Here is what he tweeted last year.

He considers block lists a problematic element in the app. According to him, “They mess up the recommendation system and create a DDoS vector.”
