X Offers Video and Audio Calls to Non Paying Users

Initially introduced for iOS users last year, the audio and video call feature was restricted to premium subscribers only. Thus, limiting the reach of this feature to a handful of users.

Earlier this year, X rolled out the audio and video call feature for Android users as well. But now the news is that the company plans to widen the access to non-paying users as well. This announcement comes as an effort of the company to enhance user experience, diversify its services, and start heading toward the vision of Elon Musk.

An Engineer at X shared the news of the expansion of the calling feature through his X account. Here is what he said. “We’re slowly rolling out audio and video calling to non premium users, try it out! now you can also choose allow calls from everyone”

Even Elon Musk hinted at this at the start of the month to which X engineer Enrique replied, check out the above tweet. Elon declared that the platform intends to democratize access to audio and video calling features and make it available to all users once the company is confident in its reliability and functionality.

This move from the company is a bit different from what they’ve been doing since Elon Musk’s takeover. They moved towards a subscription-based model for extra features like these. This is a shift from the strategy they’ve been employing for the past year or so. The Premium subscribers were previously required to access the calling functionality through the phone icon in direct messages but with the latest update, all users will have the same feature without the need for subscription.

The users will have the option to receive calls from anyone on the platform. Users can also adjust the settings based on their individual preferences.
