GTA 5 is all the rage these days not for the sole reason of being a fun game but it is the longest-running game in the entire series. First released in 2013, GTA Theft Auto Online has covered a long way and is still popular within the GTA fandom. Regular updates are also there and future series have also been planned. But what makes the fandom more curious is if GTA 5 is a cross-platform or not.
About cross-platform, it is one of the popular features that is there in most of the high-profile games such as Rocket League, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, and so on. The feature lets players use different platforms to compete against each other. This has made GTA fans wonder if their favorite game will get the cross-platform feature in 2020.
If you were wishing that 2020 would be the year when your favorite game would let you experience cross-play, you were wrong. GTA5 is not a cross-platform yet and even after Rockstar has released several versions of this game, still you can only play it with players who are on the same system as you. So if you play GTA 5 on your PC, you can play with other PC players and the same is the case with Xbox One and PlayStation 4 players.
For PC, GTA 5 is available on Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Rockstar’s own Social Club launcher while on consoles, different versions are available for PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360, with updates about to be released for Xbox Series X and PS5.
Also, GTA 5 released 7 years ago and till today they didn’t release cross-platform support proposes that Rockstar is inclined towards selling copies of the game for different systems rather than letting the players having different devices play together using the copy they already have.
It is already December 2020 and Rockstar Games hasn’t announced any support cross-platform for GTA 5 for PC and Xbox One. But that doesn’t mean that it can never happen and it is possible that the players might get migrated to new platforms and experience the cross-play. Also, Rockstar might have saved the cross-platform feature for the Grand Theft Auto 6, in case they are planning it and that will be good news for the fandom.
The future is uncertain and this could be one of the possibilities that GTA Online may never come up with support for cross-platform. Let’s give this possibility a closer look:
Since its release, there have been numerous changes in GTA Online for PC and those changes were from minor to major and every single change made the experience of playing the game more enjoyable. But this could be the reason for Rockstar Games not being able to implement cross-play between PC and other platforms. Why? Because there have been many alterations done to the PC version in the past that may or may not be available to console players. So, after 7 years of its birth, GTA 5 may find it too difficult to implement cross-play now as it would invite a lot of complications.
Something that now seems unlikely may happen in the future and GTA Online may include a cross-play feature one day. Also, there is no clear update about what is in store for Grand Theft Auto Online on next-gen consoles, so keep your fingers crossed as cross-play between PS5 and Xbox Series X could still be a possibility.
