This week, a lot of people have seen a new pop-up on X informing the users of the change to its Terms of Service. Users have to agree to them in order to continue using the app.
The most significant change is related to granting permission for X to use your data in its AI training. By continuing to use the app, you’ve given your permission to X to use your data moving forward.
You can even check out the Terms of Service of X. The main change is to the section “Your Rights and Grant of Rights in the Content.” This section now includes some specific wording around your agreement to let X use user posts to train its AI models.
Here is what has been added to this section.
“You agree that this license includes the right for us to analyze text and other information you provide and to otherwise provide, promote, and improve the Services, including, for example, for use with and training of our machine learning and artificial intelligence models, whether generative or another type.”
It means that by agreeing to these terms, which you have to do to continue using the app, you’re giving X legal permission to use your posts for AI training.
You might ask, can you opt-out? Well, the answer is no. As of right now, there is no option for users to opt-out. However, users in the EU can opt out because of the more stringent data permission laws in Europe.
Currently, X is not using EU user data for AI training. They will have to come up with a specific setting for EU users before doing the same.
