Spotify, the music streaming service, is one of the most popular apps on the planet. Like its other competitors, it also offers a freemium model where users can use it for free but with fewer features and ads. The top features of the apps are behind a subscription that most people don’t want to take.
Now, Spotify moves another great feature on the app behind the paywall. Now, the lyrics of the songs will only be shown to the users who are subscribed to the app.
Now, the free Spotify tier is even less attractive than before. However, it still lets you discover new music without spending a penny.
With the lyrics now behind a paywall, you won’t be able to sing along unless you know the lyrics of a song by heart or subscribe to the premium account. It may be possible for users to look at the lyrics in another app and sing along but that is not going to be as smooth as it will be in the Spotify app. There won’t be a real-time sync to the music and automatic scrolling.
Spotify didn’t notify their users about the change, they just did it. Several users on social media and Reddit pointed out that Spotify may have implemented this feature.
Now, the free tier of Spotify is becoming non-existent. Users can only listen to songs with ads and that’s it. There is no control of users on what and how they would like to use the app or listen to the songs.
Ultimately, the company wants you to pay for a subscription to use the app. That is why they are slowly but surely bringing more and more features to the paywall side.
