YouTube has introduced a new supervision feature that allows parents and guardians to connect their accounts with those of their teenage children. This will give them more oversight into their kids’ channel activity, and what they are posting and sharing in the app.
Now, as part of YouTube’s Family Center, parents will be able to connect to their kids’ accounts, giving them insight into what they are doing on the platform. This way, parents can better track their kids on how they are using the app.
Here is how YouTube explains it.
“Beginning to roll out to families globally this week, the first iteration of this experience builds on our existing supervised experience for pre-teens. Soon, parents and teens will be able to link their YouTube accounts in our new Family Center hub. In Family Center, parents can see shared insights into their teens’ channel activity on YouTube including the number of uploads, subscriptions, and comments.”
According to the company, this new feature aims at enhancing parental awareness of their teen’s online behavior and promoting safe content creation practices.
YouTube hinted at introducing this feature last month.
The new supervision feature can be accessed through YouTube’s Family Center. Parents will be able to access shared insights such as subscriptions, comments, and upload count.
The linked accounts will receive email notifications highlighting significant activity like a new video upload or a live stream.
YouTube has described this feature as a first iteration and will expand on this in the future. They have indicated that more features or tools like this will be added to the Family Center in the future. All those tools will be aimed at providing further insights into teenagers’ online activity.
The new feature showcases YouTube’s commitment to balancing parental oversight with respect for teenagers’ autonomy on its platform.
