Meta Adds New Labels to Business Chats in Messenger

The company is now looking to clarify its data collection process within business chats in Messenger. They have added new in-stream labels that will differentiate between business and personal interactions on the platform.

Meta Added New Labels to Business Chats in Messengers

In the above example, you can see that business chats will not include a “Business Chat” label in the top title bar. Apart from that, there is also a “Business chats and your privacy” shortcut link. When tapping on that, an explainer screen will appear, just like the right image.

With this, Meta is looking to clarify that users share their information with businesses and Meta itself. The company may use this information later for further marketing purposes.

In simple words, business chats are not private and are not protected by the same end-to-end encryption tools. With these labels, the company is ensuring that users are aware that they are submitting their information with businesses and Meta.

Here is how Meta explains it.

“We’re giving people more information about how their business messages may be used to improve their experience. Depending on where people live, this could include improved product experiences such as faster response, personalized ads, and improved AI quality.”

The company also said that they rolled out these labels earlier this year and are now just expanding them to a wide array of users.

“This is not a change to our privacy policy or terms of service and this doesn’t apply to personal messages with friends and family.”

Essentially, the company is looking to ensure that users know that when they interact with business accounts on Messenger, they won’t have the same privacy as they have with private chats.
