Google’s Urgent Plea: Don’t Factory Reset Your Crippled Chromecast

Google urges Chromecast owners with malfunctioning devices

Users have been unable to cast from Google’s second-generation Chromecast and Chromecast Audio due to an outage from expired security certificate authority. The company best known for search engines is aware of the problem and is working to fix it.

During Sunday, many users were running into errors that deny streaming content to the TV and other displays, stating ‘Untrusted device.’ The tech-friendly figured out that the fault lay in an expired intermediate certificate authority owned by Google, which went invalid on March 9, 2025, at 16:44 UTC after having been valid for ten years.

These devices are no longer working properly with real Google applications since they can no longer verify themselves as legitimate Chromecast devices, prompting the start of the frustrating untrusted error. But unofficial applications like the VLC are still working fine since they do not care about the certificate expired.

“We are aware of an emerging issue affecting Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio devices, and we are working on a fix,” Google said.  In another announcement on the Google Nest community site, which today serves as the technical support site for Chromecast.

The company advised, “Do not factory reset your device – we will keep you updated when the fix is available. If you have already performed a factory reset, we will provide instructions to help you set your device up again as soon as possible.”

Information presented assumed the damage had ceased to exist almost 24 hours prior, with no explanation provided. More information has been sought from Google, and updates are to follow on anything learned. A factory reset is going to naturally solve nothing because the root cause lies within the certificate issue common in these devices.

As for the people who went forward and factory reset anyway, there is hope for restoring functionality for those who perhaps have not.
