Fitbit smartwatches might pose a potential safety concern for the users. Google has revealed that two of its models are at risk of overheating. This issue could result in injuries, hence a matter of concern.
Luckily, this problem is expected to be addressed through an upcoming software update. The Fitbit and Fitbit Versa 3 are the two wearable models that are facing this significant issue. Google has reported that lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in most modern gadgets, may overheat in some specific conditions.
In some extreme cases, this could lead to burns on the writs, although the company has reassured users that the likelihood of such severe overheating is relatively low.
To deal with this problem, Google has announced that a software update is being rolled out. The update not only aims to mitigate the overheating risk but will also reduce the usable capacity of the battery, leading to shorter battery life and the need for more frequent charging.
The update that will be out will require manual installation. For users who opt not to update their devices, an automatic reset to the factory setting will take place soon, erasing all personal data.
During the reconfiguration, the new update will be applied on its own and it looks like Google’s strategy to make sure that the vital update is implemented. Moreover, owners of Fitbit Sense or Versa 3 can check a webpage specially designated to determine if the smartwatch is affected. Users who have been affected by the issue will receive a compensation of $50 or its equivalent in local currency. However, it is uncertain how significantly the new software update by the company will affect the battery life of the Google smartwatches. With the Fitbit Sens and Versa 3 no longer available to purchase, the unaffected Fitbit Sense 2 can still be found on Amazon for $149.
