Bumble to Layoff Around 350 People: Cuts off 37% of the Workforce of the Company

Bumble to Layoff 350 Employees

Bumble was hailed as one of the dominant players in the online dating industry. Now, it finds itself at a crossroads as it is facing stiff competition and disappointing financial results.

Bumble reported its financial performance for the fourth quarter of 2023, with a net loss of $32 million and $273.6 million in revenue. While the revenue numbers are up from what the company did last year in the same period, earnings took a hit. These results are short of market expectations – sending Bumble’s stock tumbling 10% in after-hours trading.

In response to these challenges, CEO Lidiane Jones announced that around 37% of its employees would be let go. Bumble would embark on an app overhaul as a broader effort to revive growth. Jones also emphasized the plans to focus on AI and enhanced safety measures. Apart from this, the company also wants to design features targeted to younger audiences.

Jones said this during an earnings call. “We believe these actions will strengthen our foundational capabilities and enable us to continue delivering new and engaging user experiences that create healthy and equitable relationships. We have a lot of users today who love the paradigm of online dating — swiping and discovery and searching — but there’s also a set of users who want more flexibility to be able to experience and discover people more organically and naturally.”

The paying user growth has slowed down since 2021 for Bumble as the company is facing tough competition from Match Group, which owns Tinder, Hinge, and Match. Many of the features introduced in the past 18 months by Bumble haven’t resonated with the users.

Internal organizational changes also didn’t help Bumble’s cause. The founder, Whitney Wolfe Herd stepped down as CEO last November and transitioned into the role of executive chair. Jones was named the new CEO to replace Whitney.

Bumble is not the only company that has to contend with slower growth. Dating apps generally are facing a decline in revenue as users are reluctant to pay.

These platforms have attempted to combat the decline through various means.
