Apple and SpaceX pair up with iPhone Starlink support

Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) is pairing up with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and T-Mobile Inc to add the Starlink satellite network to its iPhones. Bloomberg reported this on Tuesday, citing sources familiar with the situation.

According to the Bloomberg report, the recent iOS 18.3 update for iPhones which was released on Monday, introduces support for Starlink. However, the official release notes of Apple for iOS 18.3 did not mention this new feature.

The integration of Starlink will offer iPhone users an alternative to Apple’s satellite communication service. Right now, the satellite service of Apple operates on the low-orbit satellite network of Globalstar. It as of now, provides limited functionalities such as emergency service contact, location sharing, and texting.

It is still unclear whether the addition of Starlink support will boost these capabilities to cover traditional phone features such as voice calls and internet access. Nearly three years ago, SpaceX partnered with T-Mobile US Inc., to deliver satellite communication services to T-Mobile customers through Starlink.

Earlier reports from January suggested that SpaceX was gearing up to initiate beta testing for this service. Starlink stands as the largest provider of satellite communication services and it has coverage across more than 100 countries and territories.

The service has been recently deployed for relief efforts during the California wildfires and it has also played a significant role in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.
