| Updated on March 1, 2024

The best part of having a Yahoo account is you can integrate its service with a third-party email client such as Outlook and Mac mail using either POP or IMAP settings. If you have configured your Yahoo account to Outlook, you will need to enter the correct IMAP, SMTP, or POP settings for Yahoo. Also, this can happen at several instances that you may find that Yahoo’s SMTP server is not working. If this is the case, you may not be able to send emails from Yahoo

Quick Fixes to ‘Yahoo SMTP Server is not Working’ Issue

SMTP stands for ‘Simple Mail Transfer Protocol’ and is responsible for the outgoing emails that you send from your account. Whenever you set up your Yahoo account on a third-party email service, you will need to enter these settings manually to ensure smooth transmission of emails.

Setting up your Yahoo account on any third-party email service eliminates the need of logging into your account every time you want to access emails. Also, if you want to access your Yahoo account on Android, you will need to enter these settings. Similarly, setting up Yahoo Mail on the iPhone also requires you to enter the IMAP and SMTP some settings.

So if you are facing issues with Yahoo due to the SMTP server, here are the solutions you can try:

1. Check If Yahoo Mail is Facing any Issues

First and foremost, you must check if Yahoo Mail is going through any issues before pairing it up with a third-party email service using the steps listed below:

2. Check the IMAP and POP Settings

Configuring Yahoo Mail on a third-party email client requires you to enter IMAP, POP, and SMTP settings and if Yahoo’s IMAP or POP settings are not working, you can encounter issues with the SMTP server as well. Even if you have entered the correct information, the hard drive data may have got corrupted and that’s why Yahoo is not working with Outlook, on iPhone.

So here are the correct IMAP and POP settings for Yahoo mail:

POP Settings for Yahoo Mail

Incoming Mail (POP) Server

  • Server: mail.yahoo.com
  • Port: 995
  • Requires SSL: Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Server: mail.yahoo.com
  • Port: 465 or 587
  • Requires SSL: Yes
  • Requires TLS: Yes (if available)
  • Requires authentication: Yes

Your login info

  • Email address: Your complete email address
  • Password: Your Yahoo account password.
  • Requires authentication: Yes

IMAP Settings for Yahoo Mail

Incoming Mail (IMAP) Server

  • Server: mail.yahoo.com
  • Port: 993
  • Requires SSL: Yes

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server

  • Server: mail.yahoo.com
  • Port: 465 or 587
  • Requires SSL: Yes
  • Requires authentication: Yes

Your login info

  • Email address: Your complete email address
  • Password: Your Yahoo account password
  • Requires authentication: Yes

3. Check if Any Software is Blocking the Ports

Another possibility due to which Yahoo outgoing SMTP server is not working is that the software you have installed is blocking the ports. Antivirus programs such as antivirus, firewall, or network protocols can block the ports, and you may realize that the Yahoo Mail settings are not working. You can temporarily disable the software if possible or contact your internet service provider to know how you can unblock the ports.

4. Additional Troubleshooting

If the above steps didn’t work for you, here is something else you can try:

  • Using an older POP or IMAP can also lead to this issue, so make sure you have updated the information and then try to send emails from your account.
  • For a third-party email application, you will need to generate and use an app password if you have enabled two-step verification for your Yahoo account. You can create a password from the ‘Account Security’ section of your Yahoo Mail account as follows:
  • Go to Yahoo’s Account Security page
  • Click on the ‘Account Security’ option
  • At the bottom, you will get the option

That was all about how you can fix the SMTP server not working with Yahoo.
