Do You Need Blue Light-Blocking Glasses?

Posted on January 15, 2021 | By Shinely Ainsworth

How much time we spend exposing our eyes to blue light continues to grow from time to time. From sitting in front of the computer in the office to getting in front of the television when we get home. And then, we resume to the laptop again or our smartphone until we finally nod off. The digital and entertainment industries are not helping matters as they continue to dish out content tailored to keep us glued to these screens.

Many people expose themselves non-stop without being aware of the risks involved. These screens – computer, television, smartphones – and LED lights emit blue light, a particular spectrum of light in the visible light spectrum. Some experts have reported blue light to affect our eyes and general body health adversely. Blue light interferes with our sleep-wake pattern as well as give us digital eye strain.

Blue light blocking glasses were invented to block this high-energy blue light to decrease our level of exposure and increase screen contrast. Studies have revealed that specific lenses that block blue light can help with the reduction of eye strain that is felt as a result of overexposure.

    A Little Perspective

The light spectrum can be divided into visible and invisible. The invisible part consists of ultraviolet (UV) light. Blue light is one of the rays of the light spectrum that is on the visible part. Other colors include red, orange, yellow, and green. These colors vary in wavelength and energy. Blue light measures 380 – 500nm in wavelength, and the sunlight is the largest source.

    Why Do You Need Them?

Truly, blue light is beneficial for some of our needs, such as maintaining our circadian rhythm. But too much exposure disrupts the same system. Even though we all get exposed to blue light from sunlight and devices without any problem, you may need to invest in blue light blocking glasses based on some factors. Your lifestyle and job should be at the top of the considerations, but below are the top reasons you might want to take a look at.

Spends a Considerable Amount of Time on Digital Devices

Blue light blocking lenses would greatly benefit if you find yourself staring endlessly at different blue light-emitting screens. The Vision Council says that 4 out of 5 American adults spend more than 2 hours on digital devices every day. A large number (67%) even use multiple devices simultaneously, according to the findings.

If you are a culprit of any of these, you may have noticed the strain on your eyes or an inability to go to sleep. That means you need gasses to block the blue light. It will help you fall asleep as well as reduce the strain on the eyes. A lifestyle that exposes your eyes to blue light means a great need to protect your eyes’ overall health.

You Want to Get Better Sleep.

There is no overemphasizing the need to get enough sleep. It refreshes us and helps us keep our organs in a perfect state. Plus, there is nothing like a good night’s sleep. However, sometimes, we do not get enough sleep or are not restful due to waking up from time to time.

Melatonin is a hormone that is crucial in regulating our circadian rhythms and helping us get to sleep. Blue light from digital devices suppresses this hormone’s production, and high-efficiency lights such as LED have the same effects. Additionally, it enhances cortisol production, which also supports alertness and disrupts sleep.

Blue light blocking glasses can also help in this regard. By protecting your eyes from blue light that prevents sleep, you can asleep fast and get a better sleep routine and wake up feeling more energetic in the morning.

    Blue Light Affects Us All

Blue light is ubiquitous, including natural and man-made sources. And a greater risk requires greater protection. It is even more disturbing since the eyes cannot protect themselves. The lens and cornea in our eyes can block UV light from getting to our retinas; however, they are ineffective against the spectrum’s visible rays. The retina is delicate and light-sensitive. Hence, using light blocking lenses is the only way to get protection.

You Want to Decrease the Risk of Macular Degeneration

Since the delicate retina can get affected by blue light, reaching it from outside, macular degeneration may occur, and the cells can get damaged. Continuous exposure may then lead to deterioration of the macular.

These Glasses do not Make Your Vision Dark.

Many people enquire whether these glasses will dim their vision. Blue light blocking glasses can be made with different materials, including amber lenses, and most of these glasses would block blue light effectively without dimming your vision. Therefore, you can put them on throughout the day and go on with your normal activities.

    Conclusion

Blue light blocking glasses are effective against blue light emissions and prevent eye defects that result from them. If your eyes frequently get exposed to natural or artificial blue light, you should consider buying one.
