How-to Guide: Install Your Own Spectrum Internet with Self-Installation

To contain the spread of COVID and to follow the social distancing restrictions imposed by the government, Charter Spectrum has decided to suspend its professional installation service temporarily. As a result, they have introduced self-installation for those who newly subscribe to their service or order equipment.

Fortunately, you don’t need technical expertise to install and activate your Internet services. It’s so easy, you don’t even need a professional’s help. Of course, when you subscribe to the Spectrum net billing service, things are different. A technician will have to visit your place for setting everything up if you don’t know how cable boxes work.

Let’s show you how self-installation works.

Installing Spectrum Internet Services

When you initially sign up for the provider’s Internet services, they will send over a self-install kit. Don’t panic! It comes with all the basics you need to hook up to the internet and activate your services.

The Self-Install Kit

Here’s what’s included in the self-install kit:

  • Coaxial cables
  • Coaxial splitters
  • 2 power cables
  • Ethernet cable
  • Modem
  • Manual
  • Wi-Fi Router

Follow these steps to get started:

1: Connect the Modem

You will need a coax and power cable for this step. perform the following steps:

  1. Take one end of the coax cable and connect it to the cable outlet. Take the other end and connect it to the other end of the modem.
  2. Now, take the power cable and connect it to the modem.
  3. Plug the other end of the modem into the outlet
  4. Wait for the modem to connect

(This should take 2 to 5 minutes)

  1. When the status of the light on the modem is solid, this means the modem is connected

2: Connect the Modem to the PC or Wi-Fi Router

From your PC or any other mobile device, visit spectrum.net/selfinstall and answer the questions asked. You might be asked to verify your account. Your services will activate all your done.

Another way to activate your services is to call support and ask them to activate. Once your services are activated, create an account on Spectrum.net for managing your account and equipment.

What to Do If the Installation Fails?

This could happen to anyone. In case of failure, check the following:

  1. Make sure all cables are plugged into the port correctly
  2. Call the provider to ensure if your service is activated
  3. Repeat the process again

If the problem persists and you are certain you have followed every step correctly, call customer support. Chances are there is some technical issue or a fault in the equipment. You may have to replace the equipment.

DIY Installation Vs. Professional Installation

If you are good at following instructions, you should be able to understand how self-installation works. Calling a professional for installing and activating your services will cost you $49.99. It’s a one-time but still too much. Wouldn’t it be better if you spend this money on a night at a restaurant?

Go the DIY way and save money. Of course, if you think this information was overwhelming, you can always call the provider and ask if professional installation is available.

How to Order the Self-Installation Kit?

When you order new equipment or subscribe to the provider’s internet services, choose between professional installation and self-installation. When you choose the latter, the company sends the self-install kit to your address via mail.

Once the kit arrives, make sure you check nothing is missing. If case something is missing, contact the provider right away.
