Next Slide, Please: How to Make Your Webinar Look Good

Webinars can be fabulous, but they can also be very dull. Their potential all too often goes unexplored. Slow-moving, text-heavy webinars – and bored participants – abound.

Sometimes it seems that the organizer has concentrated so hard on ensuring that all the information has been included that they’ve forgotten to make it engaging. And engagement is what it’s all about.

‘Tell me and I’ll forget. Teach me and I’ll remember. Involve me and I’ll learn.’

  • Benjamin Franklin

A webinar’s very essence is its capacity for involvement. Take a look at your webinar platform for ideas – after all, what is a webinar platform for if not to offer ways to engage with your audience? As it happens, one of the best ways to engage with your audience is to concentrate on the visual aspects of your webinar, and here are a few ways in which you can do so.

Picture This

Visual impact is a big weapon. Images are often used just as nice illustrations or as ways to break up the text, but they can be so much more than this. MIT researchers found that our brains can make sense of an image in 13 milliseconds, or quicker than the blink of an eye. We are wired for imagery. So, we should be using visuals well and often.

A lot of webinars start with a striking image. A picture that has an eye-catching element, as well as some relevance to the subject, is a great way to grab attention and start to focus minds so don’t be afraid to go on to use images throughout.

True Colours

Once you’ve got your images, consider the rest of your webinar’s look. There has to be some text at some point, so think about how to make it really pop. Black on white minimalist chic? Done to death. Take a tip from a master.

‘Colour! What a deep and mysterious language, the language of dreams’

  • Paul Gauguin

OK, some of Monsieur Gauguin’s most extravagant flourishes will be a bit much for a webinar palette, but he certainly knew how to use throw colors together to secure attention. Check out his Tahitian landscapes, for instance.

Love Letters

Font can be addressed too. It’s great to have clarity, but you can do that with all manner of different typefaces, so feel free to explore. Best to check readability with a colleague or two.

Or, even better, combine text with imagery with an infographic. Infographics are fun. Probably more important than this though – they work.

Walk the Line

With whatever means you choose to pep up your webinar’s look, you should always be mindful of your company’s visual identity. It’s crucial to maintain continuity so that the brand feel remains strong.

Every passing moment is a marketing opportunity, so you need to grasp that moment and reinforce the brand. Your webinar attendees might be external to your company. They may love what your company does and how it looks. Stray too far from these knowns and you may confuse and even alienate.

To Cut a Long Story Short

Be bold and bright. Captivate with color and creativity. Get graphic and be a webinar wizard.
